A Titleblock
The Titleblock is where the borders of the sheet are defined and where text and labels are placed that define each region of the sheet.
Titleblocks define the size and appearance of the drawing sheet. You create them in the Family Editor by specifying the sheet size and then adding borders, a company logo and other information you want to see on the sheet.
You save the titleblock as a separate file with an .RFA extension ready to load.
Typically, you create your own customised titleblocks and save them in a centrally accessible location.
You may even choose to load the custom titleblocks into your company project template, so they are available when you create a new project.
Each of the steps involve more detailed considerations which are covered in detail below.
Creating a Titleblock
1. From the File menu, click New > Titleblock.
Select a sheet size template (border).
Click OK.
Autodesk Revit enters the Family Editor mode.
2. Add lines, filled regions, text and labels within the sized border.
Note You can Insert/add raster logo Images into the titleblock but this will slow the Revit project Printing process down.
3. Save the titleblock with a name of your choice in a location that is accessible to other users.
Note When printing a Sheet view that has a Titleblock model space content in viewports, use a Zoom Factor of 100% so that the ‘physical’ edges of the template family paper size is right at the edge of the paper and therefore does not show in the print.
Adding Labels
When creating a titleblock, it is important to distinguish between Text which is permanent and Labels which can be updated within the project. Labels are placeholders for information that is changed either at the project level, or on a sheet by sheet basis.

Creating a Label
A label is a text placeholder. You create a label as part of a titleblock family while in the Family Editor. When you load the titleblock in the project, you place substitution text for the label and the text will update.
1. While creating a titleblock in the Family Editor, click Label from Create Ribbon.
2. Click in the document window to start the Label. The Select Parameter dialog box appears. Select a parameter name from the list and use the Add Arrow to place it in the drawing area. You supply a value for this parameter in the project later.
3. Enter the text to display with the label in the Family Editor. What you enter does not affect the label in the project; it is simply placeholder sample text. Click OK.
4. The label appears in the document window with drag and rotation controls.
5. Move the drag controls to set maximum width of the label text. When you load the titleblock family into a project and supply the substitution text value, the text wraps according to the width you set here with the drag controls.
Label Parameters
When creating a label, you must choose from a list of existing parameters. These parameters are broken up into two types:
• Project Information
• Sheet InformationProject Information
The following label parameters are controlled using the Project Information settings. This allows you to globally define the project wide information from one location to ensure consistency across all the sheets within the project.
o Project Issue Date
o Project Status
o Client Name
o Project Address
o Project Name
o Project NumberTo modify the project information once within the project, choose Manage, Project Information and set the desired values for the labels. If the loaded titleblocks contain those labels, then the values will be updated. Alternatively, you can edit the labels directly on the drawing sheet. Double-click on the label to edit it.
Sheet Information
For information that is different from one sheet to the next, such as Sheet Number, every sheet contains properties that you can modify. These changes only affect the current active sheet.
o Checked By
o Drawn By
o Date
o Scale
o Sheet Number
o Sheet Name
o Sheet Issue Date
o Appears in Drawing List
o Approved ByTo modify the sheet information once within a project, select the sheet and edit the parameter value in the Properties dialog window. If the loaded titleblocks contain those labels, then the values will be updated. Alternatively, you can edit the labels directly on the drawing sheet. Double-click on the label to edit it.
Note You must decide whether to use a Date parameter that is for the whole document set (Project Issue Date) or for a specific Sheet (Sheet Issue Date). Remember that a Revision Schedule table included in the Titleblock can also include the revision date.
You can also add a date-time stamp.
Use of CAD Drawings in a Titleblock
You can import existing drawing formats from other software packages, by exporting the titleblock page using DWG or DXF formats and then use the Revit > Import CAD file tool to place the drawing into the titleblock family file.
It is recommended that you convert the imported drawing into native Revit linework. Multiple embedded drawings in multiple Revit Sheets will degrade the efficiency of Revit.
There are various Revit Create Detail Line, Text/Label and Pattern Fill tools that you can use to ‘trace’ over the imported drawing. See Adding Labels above.
When finished remember to delete the Imported drawing. To select the drawing that has Revit lines on top of it, make a backwards window crossing selection and in the Filter dialog uncheck all and recheck just the Imported Symbol (dwg).
Use of Revision Schedules in a Titleblock
Revit has a built in Revision Management feature. You can create a sequence of revisions, cloud them and apply indexed Tags.
A schedule of all revisions in a Project (or on a Sheet) can be included as part of the Titleblock family design. (The Revision Schedule is not placed as a separate view in each Project Sheet.)
To add a Revision Schedule to your Titleblock family, use the View ribbon, Revision Schedule tool. Select the parameters that you want displayed in the Revision Schedule and click OK to make the View.

From the Project Browser list drag and drop the Revision Schedule into the position where you want it on the Titleblock.

Modify the Revision Schedule cell Text Appearance by swiping the text in the table cell and clicking the Ribbon Font tool.
