Subject: Doors – Family Naming Convention
Last Updated: October 2014

All RVT Pacifica defined Families can be identified by the suffix (CC) used in the Family filename.
For example: Door-Ext-Single-In-2Lite-Aluminum-Architrave-(CC).rfaThe Door family Naming Convention used in RVT Pacifica is based on the building construction element type, the intended location for use followed by the frame Opening type and divisions as seen from an exterior view and lastly any construction / material description.
The first 'field' denotes the building Construction Element type, Door.
The first few characters of the second 'field' denotes the intended use Location type.
For example…
Int
= Interior use door – usually with no sill as part of it’s frame
Ext
= Exterior use door – usually with a sill as part of it’s frame
Gate
= ‘door’ designed to be used as an exterior Gate
Others of various use…
Overhead
= industrial or domestic ‘garage’ use
Roller
= ditto
The next (third) 'field' is used to indicate the Opening type (hung) and the number of horizontal divisions along the frame and the number of divisions vertically in each of those horizontal divisions.
For example…
Single-In
= single Casement hung door leaf opening Inwards (leaf = Revit panel)
Double-Out
= two Casement hung door leaf divisions opening Outwards
Bifold4
= 4 door leaf divisions hung on Bifold gear
+1LiteSL
= door assembly with 1Lite SideLight fixed panel and other types joined
Pivot
= Pivot hung door leaf such as for a commercial shopfront
RS4
= 4 division Ranch Slider construction with 2 sliding leafs
(the other 2 fixed side panels are assumed)Note that the suffix -In and -Out are normally used only for Exterior designed doors. The Interior door hung direction is left to be controlled by the Revit Flip Control. There is no need for a specific In, Out or Left and Right family definition.
Other typical third field name descriptors used are:
-1Lite
= door leaf is constructed with 1 glazed Lite
-2Lite
= door leaf is constructed with 1 Crashrail between 2 glazed Lites
-AW2
= 2 stacked Awning Lites e.g. in a Ranch Slider division
-Fanlight
= Fanlight above the door leaf
-2Sidelights
= Sidelights either side of door leaf(s) Crashrails not indicated
-3Rt
= perhaps a Bifold4 leaf unit with 3 leafs opening to the Right
The next (forth) 'field' is for any specific material and door construction type the family is designed to represent. For example…
Aluminum-Grooved
= Aluminum frame with timber jamb liner grooved for lining
suitable for typical timber or steel framed Wall typesTimber-Flush
= Timber frame construction with simple Flush door type
Other typical third field name descriptors used are:
-Architrave
= includes an Architrave trim component to internal wall face
-TG&V
= Tongue and Grooved V Jointed door leaf construction
-Glass
= structural Glass sheet door hung with special gear
Sample family names are…
Door-Ext-Bifold5-1Lite-3Rt2Lft
= Exterior use 5 single Lite leaf Bifold opening with 3 folding
to the Right and 2 to the Left (as seen from the exterior)Door-Ext-RS2-AW1-Aluminum-Grooved
= Exterior 2 division Ranch Slider, one with Awning sash
Door-Ext-Double-Out-8Lite-Timber
= Exterior Timber Double hung doors opening Outward
Door-Ext-RS3-2Lite-Aluminum
= Exterior Aluminum Ranch Slider, 2 slider (1 fixed),
all divisions have 2Lites (Crashrails to all).Type Control:
Generally ALL doors are Type defined with sample Widths and Heights.
Type names are by Width then Height eg. 1800 x 2030 (1800 wd. x 2030 ht.)
Doors by Type can then be found and included in Schedules.
Catalog TXT files are generally not used for door families.
Crash Rails:
Doors with Crashrails are regarded as different Families. Crashrails are not controlled within a family by visibility. This allows for easy library selection, Scheduling plus correct representation and Symbolic glazing lines in sections.
Materials:
Door materials are generally assigned and controlled at Project level within the Object styles dialog.Regards,
